The internationalisation of Lublin universities is one of the priority development goals of Lublin academic society. The presence of foreign scientists at Lublin universities is a significant factor contributing to establishing the prestige of local universities and the city. The City of Lublin has created Visiting Professors in Lublin Program whose goal is to support local universities and institutes for research and development, which invite outstanding personalities of science and business to contribute to internationalisation of Lublin academic society, incl.: scientific research and promotion of science among the inhabitants of Lublin.
Visiting Professors in Lublin Program is arranged by Lublin Municipal Office. The main aims of the Visiting Professors in Lublin Program are:
- increasing the number of foreign scientists at the local universities,
- presenting Lublin as a scientific city,
- strengthening international research cooperation,
- supporting the development of the educational potential,
- creating international contacts with research centres from around the world by Lublin universities and research and scientific institutes.
Lublin universities and research and scientific institutes located in Lublin can participate in the Program and get financial support from 5 000 to 20 000 zloty gross!
The application forms to the Program can be delivered:
- personally to the Lublin Municipal Office, Strategy and Investor Relations Department, Spokojna Street 2, 20–074 Lublin, in a closed envelope with a note: „Visiting Professors in Lublin”;
- by post to the address: Lublin Municipal Office, Strategy and Investor Relations Department, Spokojna Street 2, 20–074 Lublin, with a note: „Visiting Professors in Lublin”;
- via e-mail (biznes@lublin.eu) only on the condition of having safe electronic signature;
- via ePUAP only on condition of having safe electronic signature or by safe ePUAP profile.

1st edition of the Visiting Professors in Lublin Competition winners are selected!
The applications for support in the pilot edition of the Program were accepted from October 1, 2021 to November 15, 2021 for the visits taking place from January 1, 2022 to December 10, 2022. In the pilot edition of the Competition, 20 applications were submitted, with a total requested amount of almost PLN 300,000. PLN gross!
The Competition Committee selected six candidates, remarkable scientists and business people, whose presence will contribute to the increase of the internationalization of the academic community in Lublin. It will also support scientific research and the promotion of science among the inhabitants of Lublin.
Among the selected scientists, who will visit Lublin as part of the Competition, there is dr hab. Luis Inostroza. He is an employee of the Institute of Geography in Ruhr-University Bochum (Germany). His candidature was tabled by the University of Life Sciences in Lublin, whose main specialization area is the ecology of urban areas and urban economy. He gained his professional experience in Europe, Latin America, Africa, and Asia as the editor-in-chief of scientific journals, lecturer, member of international organizations, analyst, and consultant in the field of urban and regional planning.
As part of the Visiting Professors, Lublin will also visit prof. dr hab. Eng. Witold Pedrycz – an employee of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Alberta in Edmonton (Canada). His specialization is computer science, automation, and robotics, including technical cybernetics and biomedical electronics. He is a member of international scientific committees, active in editorial committees and scientific councils of leading international scientific journals. Prof. Witold Pedrycz will visit the Lublin University of Technology and conduct seminars and scientific workshops, open panel discussions, and lectures. Medical University in Lublin will also welcome prof. Om Prakash Kharbanda. He is an exceptional clinician and scientist, contributing to the development of orthodontics. He is the Chief of KL Wig Centre for Medical Education and Technology, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi.
Prof. Andrew Rothwell, an employee of Loughborough University, School of Business and Economics, will visit the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin. Prof. Andrew Rothwell is a specialist in employability, professional workers, continuing professional development. During his visit, he will participate in scientific work and conduct open meetings with students of Lublin universities in the field of professional development management and employment of students and graduates in an international environment. Among the guests is Dr Francesca Lionetti, who will visit the University of Economics and Innovation in Lublin. She is a developmental psychologist and a researcher with expertise in parenting, attachment, socio-emotional development, and Environmental Sensitivity. (Visit Cancelled)
And the final visiting professor is prof. dr hab. Steefan Poedts – head of the Mathematics Department at the Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium), chairman of the ESA Space Weather Working Team, specializing in solar astrophysics, solar weather, and its impact on the Earth. Prof. dr hab. Steefan Poedts will visit the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University.
The total value of the support granted by the Competition Committee is PLN 80,000.00 gross.

Thanks to this, we were able to learn about the needs and challenges faced by institutions that strive to establish permanent international contacts, including research cooperation. The applications for support in the 2nd edition of the Program were accepted accepted from October 1, 2022 to October 31, 2022 for the visits taking place from January 1, 2023 to December 10, 2023. In the 2nd edition of the Program, 19 applications were submitted, with a total requested amount of over 280,000 PLN gross!
Six distinguished figures from the world of science will visit Lublin thanks to the financial support from the city as part of the Visiting Professors in Lublin Program. The Programme Committee selected those who, in its opinion, will best contribute to increasing the level of internationalization of the academic community, including scientific research and the promotion of science among the residents of Lublin.
Among the scientists who will visit Lublin as part of the Program is Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Gabriele Berg, Head of the Institute of Environmental Biotechnology at Graz University of Technology (Austria), which is a partner City of Lublin, and also a staff member of the Leibniz Institute for Agricultural Engineering and Bioeconomy and the University of Potsdam (Germany). Her candidacy was submitted by the Institute of Agrophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences. She is an outstanding biologist, biotechnologist, and academic lecturer in environmental and ecological technologies. Her research area includes microbiology and environmental biotechnology. This scope aligns with current trends and directions of European and global research related to the characterization of agricultural environmental quality, climate change mitigation, and the development of biotechnological solutions for sustainable and ecological agriculture.
With the support of the City of Lublin, the University of Life Sciences in Lublin will be visited by Prof. Joan Garcia, representing the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (Spain). The professor conducts interdisciplinary research on the development and improvement of environmental biotechnologies that enable wastewater and other waste types to be treated in a way that mimics natural functioning, thus maximizing eco-efficiency. His research currently focuses on microalgae-based treatment systems and natural water and sludge purification solutions. Additionally, he is involved in the recovery of bioproducts and bioenergy in the context of a circular bioeconomy.
As part of the Lublin, Lublin will also be visited by Prof. Dr. Hab. Stephan Peth, a staff member of the Institute of Soil Science at the Faculty of Natural Sciences at Leibniz University Hannover (Germany). He is one of the leaders in research on understanding the highly complex and diverse environment that is soil and the physicochemical and biological processes occurring within it. He will be hosted at the Institute of Agrophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The goal of the Professor’s research is to successively provide information, guidelines, techniques, and technologies aimed at increasing agricultural sustainability, i.e., the highest productivity while maintaining soil quality.
Prof. Daniel Mayorga Vega, a staff member of the Faculty of Educational Sciences at the University of Malaga (Spain), is a figure who, as part of the Visiting Professors in Lublin Program, will visit the Medical University of Lublin. The professor specializes in physical activity. His main research directions are the measurement and evaluation of physical fitness, studies related to physical education, and meta-analyses related to physical fitness and health, health-promoting physical activity, sedentary behaviors, and motivation to exercise.
The Head of the Food Technology Laboratory at the Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium), Prof. Marc E.G. Hendrickx, will visit the Institute of Agrophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The long-term goal of the laboratory’s research, led by the Professor, is to understand and quantitatively determine the process-structure-function relationships of food systems. The obtained results are used in the optimization of food processes and the target functionality of food products.
The final funded visit by the University of Life Sciences in Lublin is that of Prof. Clive Wynne, a staff member of the Department of Psychology at Arizona State University (USA), specializing in animal psychology and behavior. His research primarily focuses on problem behaviors in dogs, including shelter dogs and their chances of adaptation, as well as improving training methods for tracking dogs.
As part of the second edition of the Visiting Professors in Lublin Program, the Programme Committee awarded funds to the Applicants totaling 101,494.00 PLN gross!

3rd edition of the Visiting Professors in Lublin Programme winners have been selected!
Winners of the 3rd edition of the Visiting Professors in Lublin Programme have been announced. In the 3rd edition, 23 applications were submitted, totaling a requested amount of PLN 374,930.66 gross!
For the third time, the Programme Committee selected six candidates, remarkable scientists and business people, whose presence in the City will contribute to the increase of the internationalization of the academic community in Lublin. It will also support scientific research and the promotion of science among the inhabitants of Lublin. Among the selected scientists who will visit Lublin in 2024 as part of the Programme, there is Professor Wataru Uemura. He represents Ryukoku University in Kyoto (Japan). Professor Wataru Uemura is a world-renowned expert in robotics, with a special focus on the use of artificial intelligence in mobile robots. He is also a member of the Organizing Committee of the industrial mobile robot section in the RoboCup competition – an international scientific initiative aimed at developing the application of artificial intelligence in robotics. Professor will be hosted at the Lublin University of Technology in June 2024.
As part of the Visiting Professors Programme, Lublin in June 2024 will also visit Professor Alexandros Stefanakis from the Technical University of Crete (Greece). The University of Life Sciences in Lublin will be honored with its presence. He is an expert in sustainable and decentralized water and wastewater management with over 15 years of experience in research, design, construction, and operation of eco-technologies. Professor is the author and/or co-author of 60 implementations worldwide in the field of municipal wastewater treatment and various types of industrial wastewater based on the use of green technologies. It is worth mentioning, among others: the world’s largest municipal wastewater treatment system in Saudi Arabia and the world’s largest wastewater management system from oil fields in the desert in Oman.
As part of the Program in September 2024, Lublin will also be visited by Professor Dianne Cooney Miner and Professor Holly E. Brown – Director and Deputy Director of The Golisano Institute for Developmental Disability Nursing – St. John Fisher University (USA), engaged in higher education to develop the professional medical staff caring for members of society. Proposed by the Medical University of Lublin, the visit will be dedicated to nursing care for patients with intellectual and developmental disabilities, especially for all nursing students studying at Lublin universities.
Prof. Mark J. Rozell – Founder and Dean of the Schar School of Policy and Government, operating within George Mason University (USA) – is a personality who will visit Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin in March 2024. Professor specializes in political science and public administration, particularly in the research of the U.S. federal political system, including electoral processes, the presidency, and the functioning of federal executive power, foreign policy, and national security policy.
Among the guests is also Professor Dr. Claas Nendel from the Leibniz Center for Agricultural Landscape Research, University of Potsdam, and Humboldt University in Berlin (Germany). Professor will visit the Institute of Agrophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences in May 2024. Professor’s main areas of specialization include soil science, agro ecology with a focus on ecosystem dynamics, as well as system analysis and mathematical modeling, and remote sensing.
The last visiting professor, submitted to the programme by the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin, is Professor Dr. Stefan Lorenz Sorgner. Professor is a faculty member of John Cabot University in Rome, the Institute of Ethics and Modern Technologies (IEET), and Ewha Womans University in Seoul, as well as the co-founder and director of the Beyond Humanism Network. Professor specializes in the ethics of new technologies, bioethics, and philosophy. He is one of the world’s most renowned philosophers dealing with transhumanism and posthumanism. The professor’s visit will take place in May 2024 and will enable a deeper analysis of issues related to the ethics of artificial intelligence and new technologies.
The total value of the support granted by the Programme Committee is PLN 103,933.70 gross.

The City of Lublin proudly announces the fourth edition of the Visiting Professors in Lublin Program! Once again, we invite Lublin universities and research institutes located in Lublin to participate in this prestigious Program.
The goal of the Program is to strengthen international scientific cooperation and promote Lublin as a significant academic hub. The presence of distinguished foreign scholars contributes to enhancing the quality of research and teaching, as well as supporting the international dimension of academic activities within our institutions.
Applications for visits in 2025 will be accepted from October 1 to October 31, 2024. Applications can include visits planned from January 1 to December 10, 2025. Participants in the program can apply for funding amounts ranging from PLN 5,000 to PLN 20,000 gross.
The program welcomes renowned specialists and researchers whose presence in Lublin will enrich the academic environment, influence the development of scientific research, and foster interest in science among residents.
To date, the program has hosted fourteen distinguished scientists from various fields, including:
- Prof. Clive Wynne from Arizona State University (USA), an expert in animal behavior,
- Prof. Om Prakash Kharbanda from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (India), a specialist in orthodontics and public health,
- Dr. Luis Inostroza from Ruhr-University Bochum (Germany), an expert in urban ecology,
- Prof. Wataru Uemura from Ryukoku University in Kyoto (Japan), a specialist in robotics and artificial intelligence.
The Visiting Professors in Lublin Program is an initiative of the Lublin City Office aimed at supporting the internationalization of Lublin’s universities and research institutes. It facilitates establishing and maintaining contacts with the world’s leading scientific centers, significantly enhancing Lublin’s prestige and attractiveness as an academic city.
